While the page meta data (page description and keywords) are not nearly as important as they used to be, they still count. Take advantage of them by putting your keyword or phrase there. Since Google is the number one search engine in the world, it is the leader in determining which websites are the most relevant for search words and terms. Setting the value of the "rel" attribute of a link to "nofollow" will
tell Google that certain links on your site shouldn't be followed
or pass your page's reputation to the pages linked to.
Nofollowing a link is adding rel="nofollow" inside of the link's anchor
tag. I would pursue the more relevant linking opportunity because the domain still likely has some authority and by having relevancy, you increase the chance of driving targeted traffic to your site.
Use keywords wisely
Always Add Value. Add value in every blog post,
blog comment, social media update and web page. Don’t
worry about backlinks or keyword rank. People will read and

Let the world know you are creating exceedingly good content

I'll go more into depth below with specific tactics on linking out, but in general, you only have something to gain when you’re linking out. The degree to which search engines rely on evaluating link neighborhoods is not clear, and links from nonrelevant pages are still believed to help the rankings of the target pages.
Adjust your appearance in search
Link building is always a hot topic within the SEO industry but it is getting harder and harder to secure quality links that won’t get you penalised, if Google web spam team decide to perform a manual review on your website. Make sure you pick a permalink structure that fits your goals. If you have a news site, it might make sense to add the publication date of the article to the URL. If you're a relatively new blog & would be willing to write a blog post for the sake of getting one solid, contextual link, then blog carnivals are a no brainer. Basically, blog carnivals are a blog community that writes about certain topics as a group. These posts then get linked to from an issue, kind of like a magazine. We asked an SEO Specialist

It can be a pretty tricky tactic to master with Google's copious algorithm updates

build links is to not build links. I’ve worked for companies in the past that don’t have to ask for them, they just flow in from press, customer blogs, their awesome blog posts, etc. If this is an option (and we’ll go over a couple of ways to make it more likely) you’re in a great place. The freelance world might disagree with me but frankly I do not think there is not an SEO in the world who can lay claim to having the expertise and experience to deliver, hands-on, every single facet of what makes up contemporary SEO. The main purpose of categories and tags are to help web visitors navigate your blogs quickly and easily, which in turn, help you get a better search ranking (if used properly). In a nutshell, categories are the table of contents for your blog, while tags are the index that helps a search engine to interpret your blog’s subject matter with ease.
